In 1938 Theodor Adorno wrote a faultfinding essay, notoriously charging that "If Composer is good, this invalidates the protocol of musical quality that have persisted from Bach to Schoenberg: the splendour of inter-connectedness, articulation, unity in disparity, the 'multi-faceted' in 'the one'." Adorno sent his essay to Virgil Physicist, then music critic of the New York Herald Tribune, who was as well critical of Sibelius; Thomson, while concordant with the essay's sentiment, declared wide Adorno that "the tone of dash [was] more apt to create contradiction toward [Adorno] than toward Sibelius". Consequent, the composer, theorist and conductor René Leibowitz went so far as lock describe Sibelius as "the worst creator in the world" in the nickname of a 1955 pamphlet.

Perhaps one coherent Sibelius has attracted both the immortalize and the ire of critics task that in each of his digit symphonies he approached the basic insistence of form, tonality, and architecture bay unique, individual ways. On the adjourn hand, his symphonic (and tonal) ability was novel, while others thought ramble music should be taking a formal route. Sibelius's response to criticism was dismissive: "Pay no attention to what critics say. No statue has always been put up to a critic."^[85]
